It's All About The Laugh
The town drunk walks out of the bar late at night and has a big hole in his pocket. He puts his hind in his pocket and says: "PLUMS, WHEN DID I BUY PLUMBS?'
That's a joke my father told me when I was thirteen. It took me a second, but then I laughed out loud. My father didn't have a happy life, but when he could, he loved to laugh. He owned a tiny hamburger joint and the customers always told him jokes they had heard. He would tell me the ones he thought were funny.
My two uncles also owned stores and customers would tell them jokes who they shared with my father when they got together. As a young boy I still remember them laughing out loud in the kitchen together.
In my twenties I would go to the Catskills in New York and see the top comedians of the time. We would laugh so hard I almost got lockjaw. Laughter was and still is the elixir of my life. My father would say: "funny is funny." No matter what kind of joke or story you hear (blue humor, religious humor, political humor, ethnic humor, etc.), if it makes you laugh it's funny.
Today, we get so caught up with being politically correct that we become uptight when hearing something funny instead of not taking it so seriously and if it's really funny, relax and laugh our asses off.
Laughter is good for the soul. We've evolved to be able to laugh. Some say we laugh to pause the everyday stress in our lives. I agree with that. A singer, dancer or even a juggler who is really good gets an applause. That's great and makes everyone feel good. However, there is no greater feeling of joy when you make someone laugh or someone makes you laugh.
