Like A Rock

"Like A Rock" by Bob Seger

Stood there boldly

Sweatin' in the sun

Felt like a million

Felt like number one

The height of summer

I'd never felt that strong

Like a rock

I was eighteen

Didn't have a care

Working for peanuts

Not a dime to spare

But I was lean and

Solid everywhere

Like a rock

My hands were steady

My eyes were clear and bright

My walk had purpose

My steps were quick and light

And I held firmly

To what I felt was right

Like a rock

Like a rock, I was strong as I could be

Like a rock, nothin' ever got to me

Like a rock, I was something to see

Like a rock

And I stood arrow straight

Unencumbered by the weight

Of all these hustlers and their schemes

I stood proud, I stood tall

High above it all

I still believed in my dreams

Twenty years now

Where'd they go?

Twenty years

I don't know

Sit and I wonder sometimes

Where they've gone

And sometimes late at night

When I'm bathed in the firelight

The moon comes callin' a ghostly white

And I recall

I Recall

Like a rock. standin' arrow straight

Like a rock, chargin' from the gate

Like a rock, carryin' the weight

Like a rock

Like a rock, the sun upon my skin

Like a rock, hard against the wind

Like a rock, I see myself again

Like a rock

Is that the way you felt at eighteen? I did!

Stood there boldly

Sweatin' in the sun

Felt like a million

Felt like number one

The height of summer

I'd never felt that strong

Like a rock

I had great friends. I felt loved from both family and friends. I was the pack leader. I felt like a million. People (including my parents) wanted my opinion. I felt like number one.

Like a rock, I was strong as I could be

Like a rock, nothin' ever got to me

Like a rock, I was something to see

Like a rock

I was handsome and confidant. Nothing serious got to me.

Unencumbered by the weight

Of all these hustlers and their schemes

I stood proud, I stood tall

High above it all

I still believed in my dreams
I was proud of my position in life and most importantly, I still believed in all my dreams.

Then:

Twenty years now

Where'd they go?

Twenty years

I don't know

Sit and I wonder sometimes

Where they've gone

At thirty eight all the positives of eighteen were gone. Two broken marriages, problems with my son, too much stress at work and financial problems made me sit and wonder where those twenty years had gone.

What kept me glued together was:

Sometimes late at night

When I'm bathed in the firelight

The moon comes callin' a ghostly white

And I recall

I Recall

Like a rock, the sun upon my skin

Like a rock, hard against the wind

Like a rock, I see myself again

Like a rock

I would look in the mirror and see Kenny from South Philly.  Eighteen and "like a rock!" Knowing I used to be confident, proud, believing in all my dreams, letting nothing get to me and feeling like number one, I realized I needed help to feel that way again. That realization encouraged me to get the help which changed my life. More than twenty years have passed and mentally I feel like eighteen again - "like a rock."

If eighteen was some of the best times of your life, never forget them.  If you are mentally not feeling like eighteen today or tomorrow, close your eyes and visualize who you were at eighteen. Visualize the happiness you had then. Visualize the power you had over your life. Visualize the dreams you believed would come true. Visualize how loved you were.

Repeat after me:

I can be that person again. I deserve to be that person again!

I'm still "Like A Rock"
