Marriage, What Is It Good For

Let's start with what Marriage really is - It's a legal document. That's right, when you sign the Marriage Certificate you've created a legal document that has all kinds of rules. For example, it states what happens when you divorce.  

In California the document states that California is a no fault Marriage state. That means you can divorce for any reason. However, in many other states the legal Marriage document states you can only divorce with cause (like cheating on your spouse or emotional stress).

The legal document has so many rules that it forces some people to say to their spouse: "I will only Marry you if you sign a Prenuptial Agreement." I say, what the hell gives the Government the right to dictate what goes on in my Marriage and especially if the two of us what to end the Marriage. The answer is you both signed a legal document and the courts rule.

Wouldn't it be great if we could just Marry and divorce at will. That's the way it's done in most African Countries. I love you so let's get Married. I hate you so let's get divorced. Bing - Bata - Boom it's done without any Government involvement.

OK, sooo, what is Marriage good for - it's all in your head. It may make a Spouse feel safe. We all know that's bullshit. Safe from what? The Spouse can still beat you up. As a matter of fact, the police see Spousal Abuse different if you're Married. "Oh, it's just two Married people having a fight." 

Marriage will never making you safe from your Spouse cheating. It will never make you safe from your Spouse making you unhappy and stressed out. It will never make you safe from your Spouse taking you for all you have.

Marriage shows you really love me. OH, sooo, you really didn't really love me before so we need a Government legal document to prove you really love me now. Again, I'm calling bullshit.

Marriage will legitimize our children. No, your children are legitimized by the way you love them and treat them. Your children are legitimized by the way you love each other and how you treat each other. What the Government Marriage Certificate does is involve the children in a legal divorce dispute between the both of you. It also forces lawyers and judges to determine how the children are treated after the divorce.

Marriage will make our parents and our Church happier if we're married. Again, bullshit, bullshit, bullshit!! Why should the outside world have any say in what the two of you do with your relationship? It's up to the both of you on how you want to love each other. Government or no Government is your choice not their choice.
