What Is Your Life Goal

What is your goal in life?  What goal do you have for your children, close friends and loved family members?  You should be asking yourself that question every day.

Do you define your life goal as one specific (instead of broad) element?  "My life goal is to be rich."  "My life goal is to get married and have a great family."  "My life goal is to have a great job."  "My life goal is to have somebody support me so I can lay back and do nothing."  "My life goal is to be popular."  "My life goal is to be president."  "My life goal is for everyone to love me."

I could go on and on with specific life goals, however "my" life goal is much broader - HAPPINESS.

What is your life goal?  Do you think about it or are you going through life taking it as it comes.  Do you even care?  Can you define happiness?  Do you believe: "if I only had "this", I would be happy."  Do you know what "this" is?  Can you be happy without "this?"  How do you know that the specific life goals described above will never change as you go through life?

I contend that if you believe:  "if I only had "this", I would be happy,"  you will never get the happiness you deserve.  I contend that if you don't think about or care about what your goal in life is, you will not have a fulfilling life.  I contend that if you are focused on a specific life goal, that goal will change over time.  I contend if you don't have a broad life goal, like happiness, you will miss out on a great life.

Let's say your life goal is to become rich.  OK, now you're rich - so what.  You'll be able to buy stuff.  You'll be financially secure.  You'll be able to make decisions that non-rich people can make.  BUT ARE YOU HAPPY???

Let's say your life goal is to get married and have children.  OK, that happens and your happy for now.  How do you know that will make you happy for life.  Let's say your goal is a great job.  OK, now you achieved that goal.  Are you sure that after a few years you won't have a different life goal.

The bottom line is specific life goals will most likely change over time.  A life goal, like happiness, will be with you forever.  Wanting that goal for your spouse, close friends, children, loved family members, etc. will last forever.

All of the specific life goals are just individual ways to make you happy. However, they are only one way and most likely they won't last throughout your life.  The way that works is to love and respect life.  The way that works is to love and respect others all the time.  The way that works is to appreciate everything you have, everything others give you, and everything the universe gives you.

The way to be happy throughout your life is "The Three Prescriptions To Happiness," by Ken Keyes Jr.  I described them is a previous blog, but I'll say them again:

*  " Ask for what you want, but don't demand it."
*  " Accept what's happening for now."
*  " Love unconditionally even if you don't get what you want."

Happiness IS the forgotten ingredient in life.  Start today to make it your life goal - you deserve it.
